Floodlights can be used for a variety of purposes, whether to illuminate buildings, parking lots, driveways, gardens, fountains, courtyards, pitches, numbers, or courtyards, or indoor areas. They can be used for accent lighting, task lighting, or safety lighting. You need to select a good floodlight according to your purpose; This article will focus on various floodlight specifications and guide you to make the right choice.

Equivalent power

For filament lighting (i.e. incandescent lamps), the wattage of the bulb is directly related to the amount of light produced. This is not the case with LED technology. Two LED products with the same wattage can emit different amounts of light, depending on energy efficiency. Therefore, it is meaningless to compare LED products with actual wattage.

Equivalent wattage solves this problem by converting the amount of light produced by LED (or fluorescent lamp) products to the wattage of equivalent incandescent lamps (in this case, halogen lamps). You can use the following table to select floodlights by equivalent power for various applications.

Application Equivalent (standard halogen) wattage
Small terrace (9 square meters) 80W
Backyards 80W
Small garden 150W
Drive way 150W
Medium terrace (25 square meters) 300W
Building facade 300W
Medium garden (200 sqaure meters) 500W
Large terrace (100 sqaure meters) 500W
Parking lot 1000W
Industrial loading area 1000W

These are estimates and may not be applicable to all occasions.

Light control

One aspect of floodlighting that needs attention is the control of light. If your neighbors are not far away, they may not appreciate their property being blown up by escaping floodlights.
As the name implies, most floodlights produce a wide beam. The beam angle does vary, but you can also control the light by making sure it is powerful only when necessary and carefully positioned. The naturally oriented output of LED floodlights helps eliminate stray light.

Color Temperature

An important specification of floodlight is its color temperature. If you want to highlight the building, warm white floodlights can help create a comfortable and warm atmosphere. They are ideal for many home or hotel applications.

For safety purposes, cold white or fluorescent floodlights can be said to be a better choice. This is because the cold white light is brighter for our eyes, so it is more obvious and more deterrent. This is especially true when it is suddenly activated by the PIR sensor (see below).

If you want to buy floodlights for work sites, a cooler color temperature is a wise choice. It not only looks more natural, but also stimulates alertness and attention.

You can choose a color temperature to emphasize garden tones. Cold white is suitable for waterscape or silver metal surface, while warm white is suitable for brick or wood structure, plants and shrubs. The colorful autumn and winter growth benefits from the warm white light.

PIR and dusk to dawn sensor

PIR sensors automatically trigger light when sensing movement within a given range, which makes them particularly useful in security lighting. The duration of the light can usually be set by the user.

The economy of the dusk to dawn sensor is slightly lower than that of the PIR sensor, because it automatically keeps the light on at night. This is useful if you want to create the illusion that property is occupied and/or enhance surveillance.

Solar Floodlight

Solar floodlights are more expensive than standard lamps, but can then be operated for free. The ZHL Solar Family LED dual floodlight with PIR sensor combines the solar panel with the PIR sensor. It charges during the day and provides an output of up to 200 lumens for 10 seconds when motion is detected.

Multi functionality of floodlighting

Floodlights illuminate the exterior for aesthetic or safety purposes, and today they have more fashionable, attractive, and less conspicuous designs. Check out the extensive floodlight series of ZHL Lighting Group to see how you and your property or business can benefit from it.
